The role of lignin in the mechanical permanence of paper. Part I: Effects of lignin content
J. Pulp Pap. Sci. 19 (1993) J235-J239

A comparison of different delignification methods shows that the presence of lignin in paper does not affect a greater loss of strength properties upon accelerated ageing. Measurement of the degree of polymerisation also shows that the presence of lignin, rather than accelerating, may inhibit cellulose degradation to a minor extent. Experiences with natural ageing confirm the results of the accelerated ageing experiments, that lignin does not have any detrimental effect on the mechanical permanence of paper.
